what is your style?

What is your style? Do you have to have one?

When it comes to fashion, we are told that everyone has a style. While that may be true for the majority, it isn’t always true for everyone…or is it?

I was recently out and about, and I had a stranger come up to me and tell me that they “loved my style.” A few days later, I had another person tell me the same thing. Now, this is awesome and flattering, but it got me thinking. Each one of my outfits were two completely different styles. So, what is my style?

I have never really asked myself this question. When it comes fashion, I like what I like, that is all there is to it. To really figure this out, I opened up my closet and took a good hard look inside to see if there was a definite style.

Spoiler alert….there wasn’t.

This also got me thinking about my friends and family. Do they have a specific style? The answer is an overwhelming, YES!

I never really thought about it because, let’s just be real for a second, I don’t hang out with my friends because of what they wear. What I realized was, on this odd reflection that I was having, was that even if my friends didn’t have just one style, they definitely have specific styles for the situation. (friendly gathering, formal, nice dinner, etc.)

My closet, on the other hand, looks like a giant fruit cake of different styles. Okay, so maybe a fruit cake isn’t the best analogy, fruit cake is gross. My closet is not gross, it is a magical wonderland of me. This analogy may be better than the first thing that came to my mind, but is better left unsaid. Basically what this all boils down to is, if there is a style out there, I probably own something from that style.

Which brings us back to the question, “What is my style?”

Well, in the moments that those strangers mentioned my style, that was very much my style, AT THAT TIME. My style is 100% me. I don’t fit into any particular box(es), even the “eclectic” style really doesn’t match up for me. My style is living in the moment.

I choose what I wear based upon how I feel or how I WANT to feel that day. Fashion, to me, is a reflection/direction of my emotions. I did not realize that I did this until I sat down and really thought about my “style,” and what prompted me to pick that dress or that sweater for the day. Why do I feel the need to put on a full face of make-up one day, and go all natural the next? The answer 99% of the time is, because of how the clothes made/would make me feel while wearing them.

I don’t pick my clothes to impress others, I pick my clothes based upon what I love in that moment. Yes, I do dress for the different situations, I am obviously not going to wear 4” heels to walk around (props to you if you can do this) or go on a hike; and I’m not going to wear my most comfy lounge wear to a formal gala. So, while I do allow the “dress code” of the situation to help dictate some of my clothing choices, the style of those choices will be my own, and for ME.

My style is ME and it is as versatile as my personality. Each day is a new adventure in life and I express that day’s adventures through my clothes. I love this about me. I think everyone should try different things if they want to. Don’t box yourself in, let yourself be you and love every aspect of it.
